RICHARD obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree with Honours from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom. He was called to the English Bar as a Barrister-at-Law at Lincoln’s Inn in 1999. He was thereafter admitted to the Malaysian Bar as an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in October 2000. To date, Richard has been in active legal practice for more than 20 years and has acquired a reputation in the profession for his humility, devotion and reliability amongst peers and clients.

 

As a litigation lawyer since 2000, Richard advises various clients from various industries including professional bodies such as the Board of Engineers, Malaysia. He is frequently engaged in complex dispute resolutions by foreign as well as local clients. He acts for contractors and employers in a wide range of construction disputes involving design and construction failures including collapse, settlement, structural and non-structural defects, and contractual matters such as delay, termination, certified claims, under-certification, variations, loss and expense, NCRs, liquidated damages, fraud, local authorities’ approvals, land surveys, surrender of lands and injuncting performance bonds.

 

Richard deals regularly with intricate issues and analysis-heavy matters. He has acted in numerous commercial and civil litigations and arbitrations involving shareholder disputes, directors’ breach of fiduciary duties, breach of contract, fraud by employees, fraud by directors, asset tracing, breach of confidentiality, restraint of trade, friendly loans, suits by undisclosed agents, action arising from breach of takeover and merger codes, minority oppression, private nuisance, defamation, and insolvency, and international trade amongst others.

 

Richard developed particular interests for fraud cases and engineering disputes, involving complicated legal points of which he constantly and creatively seeks to resolve in the best interests of his clients. Richard has produced reported cases in construction, fraud, adjudication, defamation and numerous civil and commercial cases. They include Federal Court and Court of Appeal cases, some of which addressed and advanced novel points of law in Malaysia.
